So I have downloaded and updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 9 and below are the results and my findings on the new iOS 9.
Performance-wise on old iPhone
So far, in terms of overall performance I didn't see anything lagging for iPhone 5, so I assume for iPhone 5S and above, the iOS 9 update should be run just fine.
What's New and Noticable
1. Font Type
The Font type used in iOS 9 is different from previous iOS 7 and iOS 8. You may notice the difference on the app label, iOS stock keyboard, the signal bar on top of the screen.
2. No more Passbook, Changed to Wallet
Passbook app now changed to Wallet. Their purpose is still the same, keeping your hotel booking, credit card info, etc. Apple renamed it to wallet so that it will be 'meaningful' friendly for everyone. Who doesn't have wallet anyway?
3. Spotlight search is now accessible from Top (slide down) and Left (slide left from page 1)
If you are using iPhone since iOS 6 or below and use iOS 7 or iOS 8 afterwards, you should notice that they moved the Spotlight - that previously was accessible from page 1 then slide to the right
- to the top - slide down from the main menu.
Now with iOS 9, Spotlight search is accessible from both Top (slide down from main menu) or from Left (slide right on main menu page 1)
4. Spotlight search is now more powerful than ever before
Yes, now you can search not only contacts, and available apps on your iPhone, but now you can search using Siri to search web, app store (for apps) and even maps
(for location).
5. Siri has new interface, more powerful and even now recognize your voice
Hold down the home button, it will bring up the new Siri interface - if you own an Apple Watch, it's the same interface as in Siri on the Apple Watch.
According to Apple keynotes on iOS 9, Siri is now more powerful in helping you with your queries and daily needs - I haven't really tried them myself. I will update this section once I do.
If you go to Settings > General > Siri, you will find 'Hey Siri' option. Turn it on and follow the guide for Siri to acknowledge and recognize your voice. Once setup, Siri will only listen and activate if you are the one calling her.
6. News app
Once updated to iOS 9, you will feel that your home screen is a bit packed than it was previously. That's because Apple add a few new stock apps, one of them is News.
If you ever used Flipboard app before, it is more or less the same. Pick few categories you like, then the News app will show the news to you.
7. iOS 9 Switch Between App Interface
Press down the home button twice then you will find the iOS 9 app switcher is now changed to something new. Now all the opened apps will be shown in a stack. The way to close the app remain the same, slide up to kill the running apps.
That's all the new iOS 9 features that mostly noticeable to me, of course Apple has another bunch of improvements in which I probably don't know yet or haven't felt the improvements yet.
